Cutting ties

Thinking tonight of everyone who has had to say goodbye to a most beloved friend, love interest or relative not because that person was toxic and negative, but because for some reason the company they kept reeked of manipulation, dishonesty, and abuse.

Saying goodbye is so terribly difficult. Often, it takes years to find strength and often it takes time to let that decision be final… to finally let a person go when your heart beats more loudly than your voice and your tears begin deep within. Leaving an abusive situation is no easy task. Criticisms are so easily tolerated when the invested and wronged party reaches for that one complement and one spark of hope, or that one day that might just turn the situation around. I feel nothing but remorse and sadness for people being victimized when they themselves aim to project love.

We often hear about the problems of allowing negativity to rule our lives, whether it be your own or that of a loved one. But I want to speak on something different.

You see I have had to walk away from those I care about, for at least a time, not because of anything they did, but because of the lingering negative company they kept.

My dearest and absolute best friend was engaged to a manipulative, impulsive, drug-induced and unstable man. I hated him. I hate him still. You see I remember seeing her so thin and unhappy. I remember her screaming and crying. I recall her yelling and there was a time when I thought, I’ve really lost her. That’s it. He has such a hold on her emotions. I’ll never have my friend back. Luckily, this was not the case, she found her way back, and has been married for years to a man that I am oh so very thankful for.

But this is not the only time in my life when I have had to separate myself from people who I really thought were enjoyable and genuine simply because the people around them were intolerable.

I’m curious to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience or hardship of letting go of someone, not because of anything they did, but because they seemed to be a catch-all for the crazies.
